Project Proposal

Project Evaluation

I have created my final piece ; a structural avant garde garment which explores the significance of queer romanticism throughout history. My garment represents a best in show trophy celebrating the revolution of queerness in the 18th century. I am very pleased with the kitschy aesthetic I have created ; I believe you can see the clear links to my research. Once more I heavily adorned my garment through my research into poodle grooming competitions , whilst expressing 18th century queerness. My garment showcases the contrast of research topics through a merged outcome.

To accompany my garment I designed a pair of matching heels , using golden dog bones to provide a comical kitschy adaptation of competition trophies. I am very pleased with my design as this was a last minute decision made due to COVID-19. I decided to take risks and experiment with designs due to my extension of time in the house.  I believe COVD-19 has made my work more experimental ; by using resources and space limited to my house I had to adapt my designs and problem solve through experimentation.

I am particularly happy with my choice of fabrics ; using baby blue pleather contrasting with pink silk depicts my queer Kitsch aesthetic. My research into gay leather culture and the uprising of silk within 18th century fashion makes reference throughout my garment. In particular, I am very happy with my choice of pleather, it stands out for its eccentric yet tough characteristics; this is a concept I want my garment to portray.

Designing In isolation has hugely impacted my work ethic ; I need structure and schedules to keep my creative flow. Therefore I spent a lot of my time planning my days and creating a tight work schedule to keep me busy. I am proud of myself for keeping up my work ethic as I assumed I would loose interest and motivation. Designing through lockdown has been challenging however I am somewhat thankful for this experience. It has given me the strength and problem solving skills to work through any issue. This project has informed me to trust the design process. Now I feel more confident with myself to let the design process flow.
